Catalytic converter clogged
When catalytic converters fail they normally clog up with debris and block the flow of exhaust gas from getting out of the system this is when we call it catalytic converter clogged. This causes extreme performance problems. In the extreme cases it will even prevent the car from starting at all. Most of the time it acts like a governor and limits the engine RPM to a fast idle. So how do you check a catalytic converter without removing it from the car? You can do a vacuum check at idle and then at 1500 RPM. If the vacuum is say 21 inches at idle and like 15 inches at 1500 then the cat is likely clogged. In a carbureted car you can remove the air cleaner and have someone hold a strong light near the intake of the carb. Then look across the top of the carb into the light and rev it up. If you see a cloud of fuel vapor pumping up and down sort of hovering over the carb then the cat is likely plugged.
A totally catalytic converter clogged causes the engine to quit after a few minutes because of all the increased exhaust backpressure. When catalytic converters fail they normally clog up with debris and block the flow of exhaust gas from getting out of the system. this causes extreme performance problems. In the extreme cases it will even prevent the car from starting at all. Most of the time it acts like a governor and limits the engine RPM to a fast idle. Have them checked by a qualified mechanic and replaced with high flowing factory replacements. Catalytic converter is part of the automobile exhaust system. It converts harmful compounds in exhaust into harmless compounds. In a typical passenger car, the catalytic converter, which resembles a muffler in shape, is between the engine and the muffler. It is on the underside of the car, usually underneath the passenger seat.
The symptoms of a catalytic converter clogged are usually anemic power, poor fuel mileage, and, in serious cases, backfiring through the intake. A quick look at the EPA replacement regulations for catalysts is appropriate here. First, the car must qualify for the installation of an aftermarket cat. That means it has to be beyond the emissions warranty, then, if it's failed an approved pollution test, the converter is mechanically damaged or clogged, or there's none present, a new unit can be installed. Factory converters, especially the ones in the early stages of emission testing, do not have high life expectancy when used in high performance applications. Converters with high mileage may break apart or actually melt, thus clogging the entire exhaust system. If you notice a rattle from your system, extreme heat or a lack of the power you once had, it's likely that your catalytic converters have gone south.
