Catalytic converter diagnosis

The diagnostic process is the process of evaluating symptoms and test information, performing tests on specific components, and re-evaluating until a diagnostic conclusion is reached. Unfortunately, there isn't a step-by-step procedure that will lead to the correct diagnostic conclusion for every possible scenario. Many factors come into play that affect what action a technician should take to arrive at a correct catalytic converter diagnosis conclusion in the most efficient way. Each situation must be evaluated on an individual basis considering all of the available information. This makes emissions diagnosis a difficult topic to explain.

It was in the 1980's that the United States passed a federal law that required all new automobiles to have catalytic converters. A catalytic converter diagnosis takes the carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons that are given off as waste from the combustion of gasoline in the car's engine and converts them into water and carbon dioxide gas. Closely resembling a muffler in appearance, the catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system and has an outer shell made of stainless steel. The similarity with a muffler ends there as catalytic converters contain a catalyst made from a noble metal such as platinum, palladium or rhodium. A catalyst is defined as anything that induces or accelerates a change. At least one catalytic converter has been used on cars since 1975; today, cars may have two or more depending on the engine configuration and manufacturer.

The information presented here is to help you to understand vehicle emissions diagnosis. You won't magically be transformed into a competent diagnostic technician, but you will be much better prepared to locate a competent diagnostic technician and repair shop, and be more aware of what you should expect from them. A catalytic converter diagnosis is not a repair. Before a repair can be performed, the cause of the problem must be identified. Identifying the cause of the problem is the diagnosis. For example: a vehicle that has excess hydrocarbon emissions (the problem) is diagnosed and the technician concludes that the catalytic converter is defective (the cause of the problem). To correct the problem, the technician replaces the catalytic converter (the repair).
