Catalytic Converter Plugged

When catalytic converters fail, they normally get plugged up with debris that blocks the flow of exhaust gas from getting out of the system. This causes extreme performance problems. If the catalytic converter is plugged, it causes extreme consequences where it can even prevent the car from starting at all.

Most of the times it acts like a governor and limits the engine RPM to a fast idle. So it's best to check when the catalytic converter gets clogged or plugged. To do this, you can perform a vacuum check at idle and then at 1500 RPM. If the vacuum is say 20 inches at idle and like 14 inches at 1500 then the catalytic converter is plugged. In a carbureted car you can remove the air cleaner and have someone hold a strong light near the intake of the carburetor. Then you can look across the top of the carburetor and rev it up. If you see a cloud of fuel vapor pumping up and down with a kind of hovering over the carb, then the catalytic converter is likely plugged.

Our web site offers information on catalytic converts for all makes and models of cars and the tips in the event of any malfunctioning.

Some of the key symptoms of a plugged/dead catalytic converter include: significantly decreased low rpm power, engine running a little hotter than normal at constant cruising speeds, continued exhaust leakage near the header in spite of new gaskets, bucking/hesitation while accelerating, cooler exterior surface temperature of the catalyst near the outlet etc. If you notice any of the symptoms, then it's time to get your car checked out by an expert who will be able to determine whether you need a new catalytic converter.

A catalytic converter acts as a main line of defense against air pollution. So it's vital to ensure it is functioning efficiently and passing exhaust without creating undue restrictions that might reduce performance, fuel economy or emissions. If your catalytic converter is plugged, it will create a restriction in your exhaust system. The buildup of backpressure will affect the engine's performance severely. It may even cause the engine to stall after it starts if the blockage is severe. One of the best ways to test for catalytic converter plugging is done with a vacuum gauge. You can even measure backpressure directly by disconnecting the check valve from the distribution manifold, and connecting a low pressure gauge.
