Change Oxygen Sensor

An oxygen sensor is a chemical generator that constantly makes a comparison between the Oxygen inside the exhaust manifold and air outside the engine. If this comparison shows little or no Oxygen in the exhaust manifold, a voltage is generated. Automotive exhaust emissions are one of the major concerns in today's world. About fifty percent of Americans live in areas that exceed national clean air standards. Bosch introduced oxygen sensors in 1976 as a means of reducing exhaust emission.

Oxygen sensors have become standard equipment on passenger car and light truck engines since for over two decades. Most of the vehicles have one or two oxygen sensors. Though oxygen sensors are important in a vehicle as means of enhancing the engine performance and reducing pollution, few people are even aware of their presence. Originally called a "Lambda Sensor" when it was first used in fuel-injected European cars, an oxygen sensor monitors the level of oxygen (O2) in the exhaust so that an onboard computer can regulate the air/fuel mixture to reduce emissions. The sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold down pipe before the catalytic converter or between the exhaust manifold.

Though many vehicles have only one oxygen sensor, newer vehicles may have multiple sensors. If the oxygen sensor is worn, it can cost you a 10-15% decrease in mileage. So, it is best to change the oxygen sensor when the need arises. The normal aging process will eventually cause the oxygen sensor to fail. Besides the aging process, the sensor may also fail prematurely if it is contaminated with lead from leaded gasoline, phosphorus from excessive oil consumption or silicone from internal coolant leaks or using silicone sprays or gasket sealers on the engine. Certain environmental factors like road splash, salt, oil and dirt can also cause a sensor to fail, thereby making you change the oxygen sensor. Though some cars have an oxygen sensor "reminder" light that alerts you when you should change the oxygen sensor, most of the cars do not have this facility.

So you should keep a close watch on the performance of your oxygen sensor. Changing oxygen sensor will improve the fuel economy of your car by as much as 10%-15%. This can save a substantial sum of your spending on fuel. Keeping the oxygen sensor in good operating condition will also minimize exhaust emissions, reduce the risk of costly damage to the catalytic converter and ensure peak engine performance. Contact us to know more about how and when you should change oxygen sensor and we will see that you are fully satisfied when you come to us.
